Former Councilman Arrested For Multiple Forgery Counts

July 12, 2009
Topic: Virginia Legal News

A former Fredericksburg City Council member has been arrested for 22 felony offenses. It is alleged that Ambrose W. Bailey forged doctors' signatures on death and cremation certificates. Bailey will be formally arraigned on July 24 and a trial date will be set. Each charge carries maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $100,000.

The criminal charges relate to a period from 2005 and 2006 when Bailey was a funeral director for Bailey Funeral Service. Bailey lost his funeral license in October 2007 after the Virginia Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers determined he forged 18 death certificates and five cremation certificates between October 2005 and June 2006.

Ambrose Bailey joined the Fredericksburg City Council in 1993, completing his father's unexpired term. He was then elected to four-year terms in 1994 and 1998.
