Former Fairfax County Police Officer Indicted and In Custody Over Cold Case from 1991
July 01, 2009
Topic: Virginia Legal News
A former Fairfax County/Tysons Corner Police Detective has been indicted and arrested for abducting his estranged wife in Fairfax County/Tysons Corner two times nearly 20 years ago. The former officer is charged with two counts of abduction and one count of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. The charges stem from an investigation by the Fairfax County/Tysons Corner Police, assisted by Las Vegas police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
Detectives learned about the 1990 abductions while investigating the murder of the same victim, Joann Webster, 44 at the time of her death. She was found murdered in her Fairfax County/Tysons Corner home me on Sacramento Drive, on February 16, 1991. That homicide is still under investigation.
It is alleged that Bruce Webster, a former Fairfax County/Tysons Corner Police Officer, abducted Joann Webster, his estranged wife, on May 18, 1990, and again on January 1, 1991. Bruce Webster was arrested on January 7, 1991, for the second abduction and a preliminary hearing was scheduled. Webster did not appear in court and a warrant charging him with failure to appear was issued. Webster could not be located.
The case was reopened in 2007. Webster was subsequently located and interviewed in Las Vegas in early 2009. He was indicted in Fairfax County/Tysons Corner on May 18, 2009, for two counts of abduction and a weapons charge (use of a firearm in the commission of a felony).
In May 2009, Webster was arrested in Las Vegas. Fairfax County/Tysons Corner detectives later took custody of Webster after he waived his extradition hearing in Las Vegas. Webster is now being held in the Fairfax County/Tysons Corner Adult Detention Center as he awaits preliminary hearing.
