On June 17, 2009, a 79-year-old Vienna man died after he sustained injuries in an altercation with a Verizon employee who had been called to the man's residence for a service call. According to police, after the Verizon installation technician completed work at the elderly man's house, he attempted to leave. However, the elderly man was dissatisfied with the work and stood in from of the Verizon technician's truck in an effort to block him from leaving. When the man moved, the technician tried to drive away, but the man reached in his window and grabbed his steering wheel. As this occurred, police say the man then fell to the ground and sustained life threatening injuries. He was transported to an area hospital by Fairfax County/Tysons Corner EMS, but died overnight. The investigation into the incident is continuing in conjunction with the Medical Examiner's Office to determine the exact cause of death.
