DWI Arrests Increase 18 Percent This Year in Fairfax County, Virginia

850 people were arrested for DWI or DUI (drunken driving) in Fairfax County/Tysons Corner during the period from April 2007 through April 2008. However, from April 2008 through April 2009 the number of people arrested for DWI or DUI has increased to 1002, an increase of 18 percent. Police report that five people have lost their lives in alcohol-related crashes so far this year, compared to three for the same period last year in Fairfax County/Tysons Corner. Based on the increase in the number of alcohol-related fatal crashes, and the police department's desire to increase awareness, police report they are stepping up impaired driving enforcement.
